Football: Valencia stroll into Europa League last four with 2-0 Villarreal win

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Valencia eased into the Europa League semi-finals for the first time in five years with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to fellow Spaniards Villarreal in heavy rain on Thursday (April 18) for a resounding 5-1 aggregate scoreline.
Toni Lato and Dani Parejo scored the goals that secured the victory and set up a meeting with Arsenal and Valencia's former coach Unai Emery in the last four after the London side won 1-0 at Napoli to wrap up a 3-0 aggregate victory.
Full back Lato strolled into a gaping hole in the visiting defence to volley Valencia in front in the 13th minute at a rain-swept Mestalla to further settle the home side, who enjoyed a 3-1 win at Villarreal in the first leg.
Valencia doubled their lead early in the second half with a free kick by captain Parejo which took a deflection off defender Ramiro Funes Mori, and many fans took the goal as their cue to leave the roofless stadium in search of some shelter.
The only disappointment for Marcelino's side is that their former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin is suspended from the semi-final first leg after a late booking for handball.
"We are in the semi-finals of the Europa League and are very excited about the prospect of reaching another final in our centenary year," Marcelino, whose side will play Barcelona in Spain's Copa del Rey final in May, told reporters.
"Arsenal are fighting to qualify for the Champions League in an intense battle with various teams, they have great players and a coach who knows us perfectly well.
"But in a semi-final anything can happen. Perhaps they will be under a bigger obligation to win than us, but we have the same excitement."
Valencia and Arsenal are both battling to finish in the top four in their domestic leagues to secure Champions League football for next season but winning the Europa League offers another way into the continent's elite club competition.
Arsenal manager Emery coached Valencia between 2008 and 2012, securing three top-three finishes in a row.
He later dealt Valencia an agonising elimination in the 2014 Europa League semi-finals when in charge of Sevilla, who edged into the final on away goals after snatching a 3-3 aggregate draw with a stoppage-time goal.
Striker Santi Mina added: "Arsenal are a very difficult side but we are Valencia and we can compete with anybody.
"We've already reached the Copa del Rey final, now we have a European semi-final and we want to give the fans something more to shout about."

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Tampines Rovers v Albirex Niigata
Our Tampines Hub, 5.30pm
Livestream: www.fas.org.sg/live1/
It may be still early days in the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, but a marker could be laid down in today's clash of title contenders Tampines Rovers and last year's unbeaten champions Albirex Niigata at Our Tampines Hub.
In a reversal of roles, it is the Stags who are marching relentlessly while the White Swans are struggling for rhythm.
League leaders Tampines, on a maximum nine points after three games, can open up an 11-point gap over Albirex, who have one point from two games. Second-placed Brunei DPMM FC, on seven points from three games, are not in action until they play the Stags on April 7.
But Tampines' head coach-in-waiting Gavin Lee does not think this Irrepressibles versus Invincibles fixture will have a huge bearing on the title race.
He said: "This is just the fourth game for us and the third for Albirex. There are 20 more games to go and anything can happen. This season is going to be a close race."
Under the former Warriors FC assistant coach, the Stags have won their first three games through their brand of high pressing and passing football, scoring a league high 11 goals and conceding twice.
In stark contrast, Albirex, champions for the past three seasons, have yet to bulge the net in the SPL this year.
The Japanese club's coach Keiji Shigetomi feels that "every game is important", but his focus is on drilling his players to find the target.
He said: "We didn't have the ability to score. That is why we did more attack training last week."
Lee is not taking anything for granted and he believes the White Swans are more dangerous when wounded.
He said: "Knowing the Japanese, they will work extremely hard to correct something if they didn't get it right the first time."
The Stags' early-season form had also earned left-back Irwan Shah and centre-back Amirul Adli national recalls six and four years respectively after their last international appearances. The duo started in Singapore's two matches against Malaysia and Oman in the AirMarine Cup last week and Lee is looking for more from the duo.
He said: "I'm very happy and proud of them (Irwan and Amirul)... and there's going to a lot more coming from them as they will be motivated to get called up more often."

Football: Van de Beek gives Ajax edge over Spurs in semi-final

Football: Van de Beek gives Ajax edge over Spurs in semi-final

LONDON (REUTERS) - Ajax Amsterdam took a massive stride towards a first Champions League final for 23 years as Donny van de Beek's early goal earned a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their semi-final on Tuesday (April 30).
Erik ten Hag's youthful Ajax side, featuring several players polished in the Dutch club's famed academy, were too energetic for a laboured Spurs team who hardly got a kick in the opening 25 minutes of their first European Cup semi-final for 57 years.
Such was Ajax's domination in the early stages that they could already have virtually sealed a place in the final - but they had to be content with Van de Beek's 15th minute goal.
Tottenham badly missed injured striker Harry Kane and the suspended Son Heung-min and managed only one shot on target.
Had David Neres' shot not bounced back off the base of the post late on it would have been an even more calamitous night for Mauricio Pochettino's struggling side.
As it stands they will go to Amsterdam next week with a glimmer of hope, even if only one club have ever reached the final by overturning a first-leg home loss.
"The away goal was the most important. Unfortunately Neres hit the upright. If that had gone in, it would have been even better," Ajax's 19-year-old skipper Matthijs de Ligt said.

"But we must be satisfied with the 1-0 score. It was a tough battle but we were fortunately very sharp tonight."
Christian Eriksen, one of four former Ajax players in Tottenham's team, summed up the home mood.
"We were under-par, we didn't play our best at all. In the first 20 minutes, we were ball-watchers. We need to change it up a lot for the next game," the Dane said.
"We're lucky they hit the post and hopefully we can turn things around in Amsterdam."

TOO GOOD

Ajax have already proved too good for Real Madrid and Juventus in the competition this season and were streets ahead of Spurs in the first half on a perfect night for football.
Tottenham were chasing shadows and fell behind after a quarter of an hour when Ajax sliced through the home defence with their quick-passing game.
Hakim Ziyech threaded the ball through to Van de Beek and the midfielder calmly placed his shot past keeper Hugo Lloris.
There was a suspicion of offside but unlike in Tottenham's epic quarter-final win over Manchester City, when Raheem Sterling's stoppage-time goal was ruled out, VAR could not save the London side this time as the Ajax fans celebrated.
Van de Beek should have made it 2-0 from Dusan Tadic's pass as Ajax dominated and when Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen was replaced by Moussa Sissoko in the 39th minute after a clash of heads with team mate and fellow former Ajax player Toby Alderweireld, it seemed nothing was going right for the hosts.
Tottenham's 34-year-old striker Fernando Llorente did his best to lead a blunt attack with little service, but the Spaniard headed wide from Kieran Trippier's cross.
The introduction of midfield powerhouse Sissoko injected some much-needed energy into a flagging Tottenham side and he fizzed a shot wide from Llorente's knockdown before halftime.
Spurs enjoyed their best spell early in the second period as they switched to a more direct approach and Dele Alli had a couple of half chances.
But Ajax showed they can defend as well as attack and rarely looked stretched as the hosts huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser.
Tottenham were vulnerable to the counter, however, and Ajax came close to doubling the lead, and leaving Spurs with a near-impossible task in the second leg, after 78 minutes when Tadic linked up with Neres whose side-footed shot struck the post.

BRITAIN (REUTERS) - Aston Villa beat Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion 4-3 on penalties to reach the Championship playoff final on Tuesday (May 14) after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, scored the decisive spot kick to send Villa into a Wembley final against either Derby County or Leeds United with a lucrative spot in the Premier League up for grabs.
Villa won the first leg 2-1 at home but Craig Dawson's first-half header levelled it up for West Brom.
The hosts had Chris Brunt sent off with 10 minutes of normal time remaining but they managed to hold out in the face of a Villa siege to get through extra time and into a shootout.
Keeper Jed Steer put Villa in control with great saves from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi.
Albert Adomah could have sealed it for Villa but lifted his kick over the bar and when James Morrison scored for West Brom it piled the pressure on Abraham, but the young striker found the back of the net to spark celebrations.

Football: Iwobi, Lacazette lead Arsenal to win at Huddersfield

HUDDERSFIELD, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Feb 9), but remain the only side without an away clean sheet in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal had suffered four defeats in their last nine league games, including a 3-1 loss at Manchester City last week, but Alex Iwobi put them ahead in the 16th minute with a deflected shot.
Huddersfield pressed and harried but rarely troubled the Arsenal goal in the first half, with the difference in quality showing as the visitors doubled their advantage through Alexandre Lacazette's 10th league goal of the season a minute before halftime.
Adama Diakhaby had two good chances to get Huddersfield - who had drawn once and lost 11 of their previous 12 league games - back into the match, but failed to really test Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.
Sead Kolasinac put through his own net in stoppage time to give Huddersfield late hope, scoring Huddersfield's first goal in over nine hours of football in all competitions, but the visitors held on for the win.
Victory moved Arsenal level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, who play Manchester City on Sunday, while Huddersfield stayed bottom, 13 points from safety.
"Yes but we won," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said when asked if he was disappointed at the lack of a clean sheet.
"The clean sheet is important but our goal is to win. This was a very important victory to be closer to top four. Our target is this."
Arsenal started the match without Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the matchday squad, both missing through illness according to the club.
However, the visitors soon went in front through Iwobi, who collected Kolasinac's cross and shot at goal, with a deflection off Terence Kongolo taking the ball past home goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
Arsenal did not exert control after the opener as Huddersfield flew into challenges to unsettle the visitors, but one minute before the interval, Lacazette tapped in at the far post after being picked out by Ainsley Maitland-Niles to double the visitors' lead.
Arsenal led an away Premier League game by two goals or more for the first time since August, 2016, but their advantage was almost halved early in the second half, only for Diakhaby to fire too close to Leno before failing to find the target when unmarked at the back post.
With Arsenal seemingly on course for that first shutout, Daikhaby broke behind a static backline and nudged the ball towards goal for Kolasinac to deflect it over the line.
"We gave everything today and the way we played today made me proud," Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert said.
"At least at the end we scored. I fight until the end for this club."

Barca coach denies Anfield collapse a factor

Barca coach denies Anfield collapse a factor

SEVILLE • Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has rejected the suggestion that their shock 2-1 defeat by Valencia in the King's Cup final was the result of lingering psychological scars from their Champions League humiliation at the hands of Liverpool.
A month ago, things were going swimmingly for the Catalan giants. They had wrapped up the LaLiga title with three games to spare and there were genuine hopes of a first treble success since 2015.
But the Reds' remarkable four-goal turnaround in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final has soured their league triumph and that hangover extended to Sunday, with Barcelona blowing the chance to seal a ninth domestic double and their fifth consecutive Cup.
Admitting that his players "had been knocked off that (treble) path at the decisive moment", Valverde said: "We have lost, but not because of a psychological issue.
"It's different from the game (at Anfield) we played a fortnight ago, but we've lost again, that is reality, the feeling.
"We have not been able to fulfil our own expectations, we celebrated the league title, we thought we could make a treble.
"You're left with a bad feeling because we created that expectation and it has not been like that. We're here to win titles and not for anything else."
However, Valverde insisted he was still the best man for the job, claiming he still "felt good".
Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu also backed Valverde, who has a year left on his deal, to see out his final season at the Nou Camp, saying: "He's the coach. This defeat is not the manager's fault.
"We had a lot of chances, but the ball wouldn't go in. Sometimes, you have all the shots, but what counts is scoring goals.
"I wouldn't say the season's been a failure, but it's not been excellent either. Each year, we want to get to the run-in with the best chance of winning everything and in the end, we've lost two games, Anfield and here, and missed out on two titles."
However, the home faithful are no longer buying their excuses, with the #ValverdeOut campaign trending on social media and fans calling for his immediate sacking.
Gerard Pique also conceded in the aftermath that "the other decisions aren't in our hands". The defender told Catalan daily Sport: "It's always a good year when you win LaLiga, but the expectation was to have an even better year and that's not been the case.
"The season ends with a bittersweet feeling, because it could have been better. We're not worrying about the manager's future, we all have to analyse ourselves and try and improve."

Football: 'Brilliant' Reds have belief

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has described Liverpool as the best team he has taken to a Cup final and believes defeat in Kiev last May focused their mindset on winning this season's Champions League.
The Reds are aiming to become champions of Europe for a sixth time - and their manager to break a sequence of six consecutive final defeats - when they face Tottenham in Madrid on Saturday.
Klopp insists his team are completely different from the one that endured a painful 3-1 defeat in last season's final against Real Madrid, when he claimed Liverpool were happy to simply surpass expectations and reach the Ukraine capital.
Now, the German maintains, his team will be satisfied only with lifting the first trophy of his Anfield reign. And he has the best opportunity to end that wait on Saturday, given the quality and character at his disposal.
"I don't like to blame my other teams. I love them all. They all gave everything, but I have never been part of a final with a better team than this," the 51-year-old told a news conference on Tuesday.
"Our boys mixed our potential with attitude in the best way I have witnessed. That is brilliant, exceptional, and it brought us to where we are. I would say nobody believed more in this team than the team themselves.
"That is why we are here."

REDEMPTION BECKONS
Every team that lose a final think they will put it right. It's like a medicine that tastes disgusting. But it helps you. It can reinvigorate you.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, believes his side have reacted positively after falling at the final hurdle last season.

AN EXCEPTIONAL SQUAD
I don't like to blame my other teams. I love them all. They all gave everything, but I have never been part of a final with a better team than this.
KLOPP, bullish about ending his poor record of six straight Cup final losses with Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp has lost all three finals he has reached with Liverpool, in Europe and domestically, and he also tasted defeat in two German Cups and a Champions League final with his previous Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund.
He noticed a determination to put things right after the loss to Real as soon as the players resumed pre-season training last summer.
"It had a big influence on us," he said. "When we stood in the queue in the airport in Kiev on the way home, all in tracksuits, heads down, disappointed, there were a lot of different emotions. But the plan was, we come again. Now we are there, that is just incredible.
"I think every team that lose a final think they will put it right. It's like a medicine that tastes disgusting. But it helps you. It can reinvigorate you.
"You can use it as extra motivation and that's exactly what we did. If you look at it now, it's not a bad thing that we lost the final last year.
"It was the kick-start for the development of this team. From the first day of pre-season when we were all together, it was a big step for the boys. This team is not even to be compared with the team of last year. Last year, we wanted to be in Kiev. This year, we wanted to win it wherever the final is. There's a big difference just in our mindset."
The Liverpool boss confirmed Naby Keita will miss the final with the groin injury he suffered during the second leg of the semi-final at Barcelona while Roberto Firmino, who missed Liverpool's past three matches because of a muscle problem, is on course to play.
Klopp, who is aware that Spurs are no pushovers, also admitted that a Champions League triumph would rank as the highlight of his career.
"We know it's difficult, Tottenham knows it's difficult, so let's play a game and win it," he said.
"The biggest moment of my career was getting promoted with Mainz in 2004. But winning the Champions League with Liverpool? That would make me think of something new."

Football: Dortmund drop more points at Bundesliga bottom side Nuremberg, with Bayern just three back

BERLIN (AFP) - German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund dropped more points in the title race on Monday (Feb 18), when they were held to a goal-less draw at bottom side Nuremberg.
They are now just three points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, the defending champions who won 3-2 at Augsburg on Friday, with their lead slashed from nine points after drawing their last three league games.
"That was definitely too little from us, we have to pick up points again," said forward Mario Goetze.
"They didn't make it easy for us by standing deep, but we must improve."
Even without injured playmaker Marco Reus, plus defenders Lukasz Piszczek and Manuel Akanji, this was another below-par display from the league leaders.
Nuremberg were hammered 7-0 at Dortmund last September, but this was a vastly improved display from the hosts and the draw was celebrated like a win on the home bench.
It was their first game under caretaker coaches Marek Mintal and Boris Schommers after both head coach Michael Knoeller and director of sport Andreas Borneman were sacked last week.
The hosts deserve tremendous credit for battling, as their captain Hanno Behrens twice went close to giving his side a shock lead but his first-half headers went over.
Nuremberg's goalkeeper Christian Mathenia, who made four saves in the first half from Goetze alone, repeatedly thwarted the visitors' attack, but Nuremberg's winless streak in the league has now been stretched to 16 games.
"No one gave us a chance going into this game, which makes me even prouder that we picked up a point," he said.
Having crashed 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last week in the Champions League last-16, first leg, Lucien Favre's team again failed to score and are now winless in their last five games in all competitions.
The first half was twice halted to clear black tennis balls, thrown onto the pitch by fans in protest over the unpopular Monday night kick-off times in the Bundesliga, which will be abolished for the 2021-22 season.

Klopp unfazed by early FA Cup exit

LONDON • Another year, another early departure from the FA Cup for Liverpool. In four seasons under manager Jurgen Klopp, they have not got beyond the fourth round and, this time, they did not even reach that far.
The bigger picture this season, of course, is that they have bigger prizes to aim for.
It probably says much about the FA Cup's place in Klopp's list of priorities that he looked more perturbed by a hamstring injury to Dejan Lovren in the opening minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday than by the 2-1 third-round defeat that followed.
The German believes the injury, in the midst of a hectic schedule, highlighted precisely why he chose to name a second-string side to face the Wolves.
"Hamstring, is what I heard - without any signs before," the Reds manager told reporters. "I asked everybody, no signs, nothing, just out of the blue, so that's the decision you have to make.
"I am not sure what you all would have said if immediately from the beginning, our centre-half situation was Fabinho and Ki-Jana (Hoever); then probably a few very smart people would tell me that I don't respect the competition or whatever."
Klopp made nine changes to the side that lost for the first time in the Premier League this season to Manchester City last Thursday, with Lovren one of only two players to retain their place.

  • 2011
Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round for the first time since 2011, when they lost 1-0 to Manchester United.

  • 5
The Reds have been eliminated from five of their last seven FA Cup ties against fellow Premier League sides.

He gave rare starts to Simon Mignolet, Alberto Moreno, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge as well as senior debuts for Curtis Jones, a 17-year-old local lad, and Rafa Camacho, an 18-year-old Portuguese midfielder who found himself filling a hole at right-back.
Lovren's injury meant that they were soon joined by the Dutch defender Hoever who, at 16 years and 354 days, became the third-youngest player in Liverpool's history and the youngest in the FA Cup.
Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves either side of half-time sent Wolves into the fourth round, despite Origi's fine strike after the break briefly bringing Liverpool level.
Without forwards Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, the Reds struggled to get any momentum going forward.

Wolves, though, have made a habit of upsetting the Premier League's established top six in their first season back in the top flight.
After beating Chelsea and Tottenham and holding City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, Liverpool can now be added to the list of scalps for Nuno Espirito Santo's side.
Klopp had a final roll of the dice by throwing on Salah and Firmino for the final 20 minutes, but even their firepower failed to spark a fightback and his selection will now be questioned as he is still to deliver a trophy in his four seasons in charge.
However, with Liverpool still in pole position to deliver a first league title in 29 years, the German remained defiant over his changes.
"We played a similar line-up and had three tough games in the last couple of weeks, so it was clear we had to change," Klopp added after a run of four Premier League games in 13 days over the festive period.
"The intensity of the last few games gave me the information it was not possible to start with these three (Salah, Firmino and Mane) up front."
Wolves will now face the winners of the replay between Shrewsbury Town and Stoke City in the fourth round, the highlight of which is a mouth-watering clash between Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Gunners, with 13 FA Cup wins, and United with 12, are the most successful clubs in the world's oldest knockout competition.

AFC CUP GROUP F

Tampines Rovers 1
Hanoi FC 1
Staring at defeat and with their game plan yet to bear fruit, it would have been tempting for Tampines Rovers to just hoof the ball long and hope for a lucky break.
But the Stags stuck to their principle of playing attacking football and managed to rescue a 1-1 draw against Hanoi FC in yesterday's AFC Cup Group F game.
"No, this is the way we play," insisted Tampines head coach Kadir Yahaya, when asked if he considered switching to direct tactics when his team trailed 1-0 just after the hour mark.
"We have to exert our style and philosophy. We cannot go for the long ball just because we are losing. We have to maintain our shape and discipline and to keep moving the ball."
The draw, played before 1,671 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, meant that Hanoi stay top of the group with four points from two games, ahead of the Stags on goal difference.
In the other Group F match in the Asian Football Confederation's second-tier competition, Cambodia's Nagaworld FC beat Myanmar's Yangon United 2-1 in Phnom Penh.
Against Hanoi, Tampines built their moves with passes from the back even if it meant risking interceptions and counter-attacks from the pacy and technical Vietnamese side.
It was the visitors who struck first in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari could not punch away an inswinging corner and the ball dropped to unmarked Senegalese striker Pape Omar Faye, who tapped home.
Undeterred, Tampines poured men forward and took full advantage of Hanoi's high defensive line in the 76th minute when winger Jordan Webb broke the offside trap, galloped clear before sliding the ball under goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong and into the net to equalise.
The Vietnamese champions began their AFC Cup campaign in style with a 10-0 hammering of Nagaworld but found Tampines a much harder nut to crack.
But Hanoi coach Chu Dinh Nghiem absolved his team of any blame, saying: "I am happy with my players' performance, but I am just a little bit upset that we deserve the three points but didn't win.
"The main reason is the (artificial) field, which is very difficult to play on."
Tampines' next group game is away at Nagaworld on April 2.
