Qatar not the favourites, says coach Sanchez

ABU DHABI â€¢ Qatar beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Thursday to finish top of Group E in an Asian Cup match that garnered more attention for geopolitics than sporting rivalry.
The derby clash was the first time the two sides had met since a bitter political dispute began between the Gulf Arab states 18 months ago.
Saudi Arabia, joined by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain, cut ties with Qatar in June 2017 over allegations it supports terrorism, a charge Doha denies.
Forward Almoez Ali's brace was enough to see off the Green Falcons in front of an almost entirely pro-Saudi 16,067-strong crowd in Abu Dhabi.
Qatar now face 2007 Asian Cup champions Iraq in the knockout stage. Saudi Arabia, group runners-up, meet 2011 champions Japan.
"Every game is going to be hard," Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez told reporters. "We don't consider ourselves favourites."
Saudi Arabia coach Juan Pizzi criticised his team's poor performance in front of goal and said individual errors cost them a game in which they controlled possession. Forward Fahad Al-Muwallad could have opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he beat the goalkeeper but was denied by the post.

Qatar had a goal disallowed in a contentious decision in the 59th minute. The video assistant referee (VAR) system being introduced in the knockout stages could not have come sooner.
Despite the political context, the match was mostly played in good spirit with the players appearing to be extra polite after committing fouls in the early stages.
But at the end Saudi forward Mohammed Alsaiari was seen pushing some of the celebrating Qataris, gesturing for them to leave the pitch.
Pizzi declined to comment on the incident, telling reporters it had "nothing to do with football".
The top two of each of the six four-team groups plus the best four third-placed teams advance to the last 16.
Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan, Oman and Vietnam have scraped through to join Jordan, Thailand, China, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Uzbekistan, UAE, South Korea, Qatar and Iraq in the next stage.

SYDNEY (REUTERS) - The 17th Asian Cup finals will be the biggest in the 62-year history of the tournament but even with 24 teams battling it out, it is hard to look much beyond regional powers Iran, Japan and South Korea as potential champions.
Australia will be hoping to join that trio and Saudi Arabia as multiple winners of the continental crown as they defend the title they won on home soil four years ago.
The Socceroos triumph came at the end of a highly successful staging of a tournament played out in front of bumper crowds that has left the United Arab Emirates with much to live up to.
The Emiratis, playing hosts for a second time after 1996 when they reached the final, showed with their recent staging of Fifa's Club World Cup, though, that there is a passion for the game that can be awoken by local success.
Al Ain's run to the final against Real Madrid brought passionate crowds to the stadiums of Abu Dhabi and provided a welcome pre-tournament boost to a national team that has hardly set the world alight under Italian Alberto Zaccheroni.
It is fair to say, though, that Real also brought more world class footballers to the Emirates than the Asian Cup will with only South Korea skipper Son Heung-min likely to register with many casual football fans outside the Asia-Pacific.
That does not mean there will not be plenty of skilful football on display as the cream of the world's most populous continent contest the equivalent of the European Championship and Copa America.
The world's most populous countries will both be represented but neither China nor India are expected to be around at the business end of the tournament.
The Indians would probably not have qualified without the expansion from 16 teams, while China appear to have stagnated under the guidance of Italian World Cup winner Marcello Lippi.

Under an agreement with his club Tottenham Hotspur, Son will only join the fray for the third and last Group C match against Lippi's side as well as the knockout stage.
The Taeguk Warriors should have more than enough quality to seal one of the top two spots in the group without him, though, given the other two teams in it are debutants in the shape of Kyrgyzstan and Sven Goran Eriksson's Philippines.
South Korea, who won the first two Asian Cups and finished runners-up to Australia in 2015, look like the form team in Asia going into the tournament, having gone unbeaten in six matches under Portuguese coach Paulo Bento since their World Cup exit.
Japan, who made the last 16 in Russia before going out to a thrilling Portugal comeback, also look to have a reasonably straightforward passage having been drawn with Uzbekistan, Oman and Turkmenistan in Group F.
Hajime Moriyasu has had the Samurai Blue playing an attractive attacking style since he took over after the World Cup and even without Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okazaki they have enough quality to challenge for a fifth title.
The importance of midfielder Aaron Mooy to Australia's challenge was illustrated when coach Graham Arnold included him in the squad even though Huddersfield Town had ruled him out of tournament because of a serious knee injury.
For all the class on the ball that Mooy can provide when fit, though, Australia's title defence is most likely to rest on their ability to find the net now that the totemic Tim Cahill has finally hung up his personalised boots.
A continent as vast as Asia can rarely have put on any sporting event without the backdrop of some political turmoil - astonishing as it may now seem, Israel won the title in 1964 - and the 2019 Asian Cup will be no exception.
Saudi Arabia, who won the last of their three titles the last time the UAE hosted, severed diplomatic ties with Group E rivals Qatar in June, 2017 over Doha's alleged support of terrorism. Qatar denies the accusations.
The UAE also joined the diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar last year but the 2022 World Cup hosts will be looking to ignore the distractions and hoping their side can offer some hope of success, or at least no disgrace, in four years' time.
There are also representatives of the more troubled countries and territories of the west of the continent with Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen all looking to bring cheer to people who have endured much hardship in recent years.
Iraq did just that with their fairytale run to the title in 2007 and the Lions of Mesopotamia have been drawn to play neighbours Iran in Group D.
Iran have had their traditional uncertain run-up to the tournament but are always a force to be reckoned with in Asia and an end to their 43-year wait for a fourth title cannot be discounted.
Carlos Queiroz's side went out of the last Asian Cup on penalties to Iraq in a thrilling quarter-final played out in a magnificent atmosphere in Canberra.
If their Jan 16 group match in Dubai comes anywhere close to matching that, and the tournament can produce a few more clashes with similar drama and passion, the fans that do turn up in the Emirates will be in for a rare treat.

LONDON (AFP) - Harry Kane spoke on Thursday (March 28) of his pride at how his teammates dealt with being racially abused in Montenegro as he collected an award for "services to football" after leading England to the World Cup semi-finals.
Racist chanting was directed at several black England players, including Danny Rose, during Monday's Euro 2020 qualifier in Podgorica, which England won 5-1.
England captain Kane, 25, who scored in the match, believes the manner of his side's victory was the "best way of proving those people wrong".
"It's great how the boys have handled it," said Kane, speaking as he received his Member of the Order of the British Empire award from Football Association president Prince William at Buckingham Palace.
"It's important that the people in charge take the right action because it is not acceptable in any country or any field or sport or job. I am just proud of how the boys have handled it.
"When stuff like that happens it's about more than football but the boys focused on their job, didn't let it affect them and it proved the best way of proving those people wrong by the winning the game and scoring goals."
European governing body Uefa has charged Montenegro with racist behaviour and the Montenegrin FA said it would ban any supporters found to have racially abused England's black players.

Kane finished as the top-scorer at last year's World Cup in Russia, where England reached the last four.
His attention now returns to domestic matters and after Spurs visit Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, they finally play the first game at their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Kane said the chance to earn a piece of history by becoming the first player to score there is outweighed by the need for three points as Spurs battle to finish in the top four.
"I think the most important thing is we want to win the game," he said.
"You never want to go into a new stadium without getting a result. Of course as a striker I would want to score, but the most important thing is we win."

LONDON â€¢ It would be too simplistic to say Liverpool responded to the test of nerve set by Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp's team have been doing that since the first day of this enthralling Premier League season.
This was a test of nerve set by Burnley, the match officials and the elements, and they delivered on all counts to return the gap in the title race to one point yesterday.
Liverpool fell behind to a controversial early goal, but ultimately ran out comfortable 4-2 victors, thanks to a brace apiece from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
They were also indebted to consistently poor defending from Sean Dyche's team, who remain too close to the relegation zone for their own liking despite causing the title contenders problems all afternoon at a wet and windy Anfield.
The challenge for Klopp's men began before Anfield had properly roused itself for the kick-off.
Ashley Westwood swung a corner into a packed penalty box and directly into Liverpool's net.

The small pocket of Burnley supporters erupted and so did Alisson, who was unable to leap, having been sandwiched between Jack Cork and James Tarkowski. The Reds waited for referee Andre Marriner to penalise a clear foul, but he instead sent the Brazil goalkeeper into the notebook for dissent.
It was a bad call against Klopp's team although it gave them 84 minutes to channel their grievance in the most appropriate way.
Burnley helped them along the way with several defensive lapses that squandered the major decision in their favour, with Tom Heaton the chief culprit on an afternoon to forget for the England goalkeeper.
The hosts levelled when he failed to intercept Mohamed Salah's low cross and Firmino gratefully converted the gift at close range for his 10th league goal of the campaign.
Klopp's men benefited from another error to edge ahead, with Jeff Hendrick the culprit this time.
He played Phil Bardsley into trouble and Adam Lallana blocked the full-back's clearance, diverting it to Salah inside the box. The ball then broke for Mane, who curled a fine finish to overturn Burnley's controversial advantage.
Lallana's inclusion ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita was met with scepticism before the start of the game, but he provided the creativity that Liverpool's midfield has lacked in recent away fixtures.
It was his ball to Salah, who failed to score for the fifth consecutive game, that enabled the latter to subsequently cross for Firmino's equaliser and his challenge on Bardsley was also a key moment.
The cushion of a third goal came in the second half courtesy of another mistake from Heaton after his weak kick found Salah, who raced through on goal only to be halted by Charlie Taylor's precise tackle.
The left-back, however, could only steer the ball to Firmino, who prodded home his second.
It could have been a nervous finale when substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson netted, but the Clarets' hopes of a dramatic recovery were dashed when substitute Daniel Sturridge released Mane to stroke home in added time.
Klopp felt his surprise decision to name Lallana in his line-up was vindicated as he "played a really good game" before insisting that Burnley's opener should not have stood.
The German said: "The first goal in a lot of countries would have been disallowed.
"That never helps, but it was early so that's good. We kept as calm as possible, we forced the goals with two brilliant moments of football and defended with passion.
"When it was 3-1, we did not finish it off and it was not cool. But then, we score a fourth and it's all good."

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City survived a sloppy start to secure top spot in Champions League Group F by coming from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 thanks to Leroy Sane's double on Wednesday (Dec 12).
Andrej Kramaric's penalty put the Germans deservedly in front on 16 minutes as another much-changed City side struggled to get up to speed.
However, Pep Guardiola's men found their feet as the first half wore on and were level just before the break courtesy of a brilliant Sane free-kick.
Guardiola was frustrated by his side's wastefulness in front of goal in the second period, but Sane did at least secure victory by converting Raheem Sterling's pass on the hour mark.
City made life difficult for themselves with a flat performance in losing at home to Lyon in their opening group game and were similarly caught cold having already secured their place in the last 16.
Kramaric had fired a warning shot inches over before Ederson in the City goal showed he wasn't to be outdone by Brazilian international team-mate Alisson Becker's heroics to secure Liverpool's place in the knockout stages against Napoli on Tuesday by producing an incredible finger-tip stop to turn another curling effort from the Croatian behind.
However, Kramaric's luck was in third time round from the penalty spot after Aymeric Laporte was punished for hauling down Benjamin Hubner.
All of City's best efforts before the break came from set-pieces as Gabriel Jesus headed Sane's corner off the post before Oliver Baumann got down well to deny John Stones.
Nicolas Otamendi sent another wicked dead ball delivery from Ilkay Gundogan off the crossbar, but the hosts were finally level in spectacular fashion when Sane curled home a free-kick into the top corner from 30 yards out.
Hoffenheim needed to win just to have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages in third, but in their desperation to chase a winner left themselves hopelessly exposed to the pace of Sane and Sterling after the break.
Sane was guilty of overplaying as City incredibly spurned a three-against-one when Sterling fed the German, who tried to tee up the surprised Bernardo Silva rather than going for goal himself and Baumann saved the Portuguese's shot.
Sterling has been in the news for bravely speaking out about the alleged racist abuse he suffered in defeat at Chelsea on Saturday and news coverage he has received in the past.
However, the England international showed little sign of letting it disrupt his fine form on the pitch as he teed up Sane to round Baumann and slot home the winner.
Pep Guardiola handed Phil Foden his first Champions League start of the season and the 18-year-old was only denied a spectacular first goal in the competition by a fine save by Baumann to turn his dipping volley over.
However, it mattered little as the competition favourites march into Monday's last 16 draw where they can face Atletico Madrid, Schalke, Ajax or Roma.

Spurs have not won a major competition since beating the Blues in the 2008 final. They also lost to the same team in the 2015 final.
The four-time Cup winners are still in the Champions League and FA Cup, and also have an outside chance in the Premier League title race. But it is the League Cup that presents their first chance to end the silverware drought.
While the competition is often written off as an after-thought for top clubs, England star Alli is adamant it could be the first major prize for highly regarded manager Mauricio Pochettino, yet to win a trophy in his coaching career with Spurs, Southampton and Espanyol.
"I think every game, every competition, you want to win it," Alli said.
Spurs crushed fourth-tier Tranmere 7-0 in Friday's FA Cup third round using only three first-team regulars, including Alli, in a bid to keep the key men fresh for Chelsea.
Alli expects the plan to pay dividends, saying: "I believe we've got a strong squad.
"Players work hard to make sure we're fully fit and the manager makes changes. I think he's very good at that."
Chelsea, who host the second leg on Jan 22, will give late fitness tests to Olivier Giroud (ankle) and winger Pedro (hamstring).
Manager Maurizio Sarri is unsure whether midfielder Cesc Fabregas has played his last game but he feels the Spaniard must leave for the good of his career.
Fabregas, 31, appeared to say goodbye after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of Stamford Bridge. His contract expires this season, with British media reporting he is close to securing a move to Monaco this month.
"I don't know if he is able to play tomorrow because in the last match he had cramp in the calf so he needs to rest I think," Sarri said yesterday.
"I don't know the decision of the club. In my opinion, he needs to go."
