Football: Kane and Lloris rescue point for Spurs against Arsenal

LONDON (REUTERS) - Hugo Lloris saved Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 90th-minute penalty to secure what could prove to be a vital 1-1 draw for Tottenham Hotspur in a scrappy north London derby against Arsenal on Saturday (March 2).
Third-placed Tottenham had trailed to Aaron Ramsey’s 16th-minute goal and were offering little as a third consecutive Premier League defeat loomed in the early kickoff at Wembley.
Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot in the 74th minute to the relief of the home fans but when Davinson Sanchez conceded a penalty in the 90th minute Arsenal were poised to move to within a point of their arch-rivals having trailed by 10 a week ago.
Substitute Aubameyang, who had tumbled easily under a clumsy Sanchez challenge, struck his kick weakly and Lloris, at fault for both goals in Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea in midweek, plunged down to his right to save.
A niggly second-half ended in chaotic fashion with Arsenal’s other substitute Lucas Torreira being red-carded for a high tackle on Danny Rose who had earlier been booked for catching Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno with his studs.
Third-placed Tottenham had not drawn any of their 28 Premier League games this season but ending that sequence and avoiding a damaging defeat was a huge relief as they retained a four-point cushion over Arsenal.
Lloris’ save preserved Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino’s record of never having lost three successive Premier League games since taking over and meant he is still to lose a home north London league derby.
“Yes Lloris’ save was a massive present,” Pochettino, celebrating his 47th birthday, said.

“I am so happy because we didn’t deserve to lose the game we were better than them so it would be a shame to lose the game in that way.
“It was a tough game, difficult to play Arsenal but I am happy after two defeats to take a positive result to build confidence to go to Tuesday and Borussia Dortmund and go through to the next stage of Champions League.”

SPURS STUNNED

Tottenham were slightly shading the derby early on but were stunned after 16 minutes when Juventus-bound midfielder Ramsey, playing for the last time in the fixture, put his side ahead.
Sanchez made a hash of dealing with a long ball on the halfway line and Alexandre Lacazette released Ramsey into acres of space before the Welshman outpaced Victor Wanyama and took the ball around Lloris before sliding home.
Kane had a header ruled out for offside and Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno made a remarkable double-save just before the interval, blocking Christian Eriksen’s close-range volley with his legs, then palming away Moussa Sissoko’s follow-up.
Tottenham lacked quality in the final third in the second half and Lacazette should have doubled Arsenal’s lead when he sliced wide from in front of goal.
Substitute Erik Lamela sent a left-footer just wide at the other end and his deep cross was chested down by Rose who caught Leno in the chest as he lunged to try and poke home.
Tottenham were running out of ideas but were given a reprieve when Shkodran Mustafi was adjudged by referee Anthony Taylor to have barged Kane over and the England captain drilled his penalty low into the corner.
To make matters worse for Arsenal, replays showed Kane was marginally offside in the build-up.
Tottenham might have been expected to go on and win the game after that but it was Arsenal who finished strongly and will rue not securing a huge victory in the battle for a top-four finish.

Eleven Sports hit by poor take-up rate in UK

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of Sports" controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, could be facing closure in the UK & Ireland after failing to attract enough subscribers.
The service, launched less than four months ago, has the UK rights to sports including Italy's Serie A, Spain's LaLiga and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Eleven Sports, which was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders, is aiming to renegotiate rights deals to avoid pulling the plug on its service.
The situation has been created by the UFC triggering an exit clause on its exclusive deal with Eleven Sports, which was due to begin next month, after Eleven Sports was unable to secure promised distribution via pay-TV platforms including Sky, Virgin Media and BT.
Eleven Sports is aiming to renegotiate its sports rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and continue with a much smaller, commercially viable operation in the UK.
"Without carriage agreements with the existing platforms, alongside the challenges posed by rampant piracy, the current market dynamics in the UK & Ireland are very hostile for new entrants," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports.
"We are in discussion with our rights partners, LaLiga and IMG, about how we can restructure our existing agreements in order to continue our current OTT (streaming) service."
UFC, the popular mixed martial arts competition, is understood to be back in talks with the previous rights holder BT about a new broadcast deal.
Eleven Sports is preparing to hand back the TV rights for Serie A to IMG, which acts as agent, which would allow them to be resold.
The streaming service secured the rights to Serie A in July in a three-year deal, ending BT's six-year association with Italy's top league. In May, Eleven Sports struck a three-year deal with LaLiga, ending Sky's 20-year association with Spain's top flight.
Eleven Sports has attracted only about 50,000 subscriptions since its UK launch in August, according to the Telegraph, which broke the news of the streaming service's difficulties. Eleven Sports charges £5.99 (S$10.40) a month. Rival sports streaming service Dazn, which is owned by the Warner Music owner and Spotify investor Len Blavatnik, has said it will not launch in the UK because the market is too competitive.
Eleven Sports, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
In April, the London offices of IMG and MP & Silva, the sports rights agency co-founded by Radrizzani, were raided by officials from the European Commission investigating potential sports rights cartels.

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions to skip AFF U-22 tourney, to focus on AFC U-23 qualifiers and SEA Games

SINGAPORE - The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced on Tuesday (Jan 22) that the national Under-22 team will not be competing at next month's Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-22 Youth Championship.
A packed schedule in the opening months of this year has meant that Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions are unable to commit to the regional competition.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "We have taken into account the quality of preparation and the availability of our young players. For this year, our focus will be on AFC (Asian Football Confederation) U-23 qualifiers in March and the South-east-Asia Games in November.
"In addition, centralised training camps are also being planned for as part of the team's preparations for these tournaments."
The second edition of the AFF U-22 tournament will be held from Feb 17 to March 2 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The first edition was contested 14 years ago in 2005 before being revived again this year.
Singapore were originally drawn in Group B, alongside Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the host.
Fandi's team are currently in Kuala Lumpur for pre-season training to prepare for the upcoming Singapore Premier League season, which is set to kick off next month.
The team are also committed to the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers from March 22-26.
Singapore are in Group G, alongside host Mongolia, North Korea and Hong Kong.
The top team in each of the 11 groups and the four best runners-up will join host Thailand in the finals to be played next year.
The top-three finishers at the U-23 finals will also qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

SINGAPORE - Albirex Niigata, of all Singapore Premier League teams, should know about the importance of momentum. After all, they won their first 17 games in the 2018 season and scored in all 24 matches to complete their hat-trick of league titles.

Football: Crouch returns to Premier League with Burnley in Vokes swap deal

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Former England international Peter Crouch returned to the Premier League on Thursday (Jan 31) at the age of 38, signing a short-term contract to join Burnley from Stoke City with Wales striker Sam Vokes heading in the opposite direction.
No financial details of the deals were disclosed, but British media reported that Vokes was valued at around £9 million (S$15 million).
Crouch was part of the Stoke team relegated to the second-tier Championship last season but has not started a game since September.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool forward, whose deal with Burnley runs until the end of the season, has previously played for six Premier League clubs in his career and scored 108 top-flight goals.
He also won 42 caps for England, scoring 22 goals between 2005 and 2010.
Despite his age, Crouch said he still had the ambition to play at the highest level.
"I still want to achieve things," he told Burnley's website.
"I want to get more games and I would love to add to the 100 Premier League goals.
"My game has probably changed a little bit. I'm not 25. But my attributes haven't waned. I never really had blistering pace, so I haven't lost that. I know I can impact games at this level."
Vokes, who waved goodbye to Burnley fans after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, has signed a 3-1/2-year contract at Stoke, having struggled to secure a regular starting place of late at Turf Moor.
The Wales international won two promotions to the Premier League with Burnley in his seven seasons with the club, scoring 62 goals in 258 appearances.
"It's great to have it finally done," he told Stoke's official website . "It has been a long day and a lot of waiting around but I am delighted - I just can't wait to get started now."
The 29-year-old joined Burnley from Wolverhampton Wanderers and was part of the Wales team which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
"Burnley was a huge part of my life, I really found my home there and I made a lot of good friends there, but it was time for me to move on - and what better club to do that with than Stoke City," Vokes added.

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

PARIS • Dani Alves jokes that Paris Saint-Germain are still Champions League "virgins", but the presence of players like the decorated Brazil defender only helps to make them more credible contenders to win their maiden European Cup.
In a glittering career, he has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona, while reaching another final with Juventus.
Alves is a veteran now, his 36th birthday falling several weeks before this season's final, but he is conscious of what players like him and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 41, can add to a PSG squad comprising football's two most expensive players in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
"We know how to win and how to lose. What we try to transmit to the others is that either we all go together in the same direction, or we leave the doors open to a defeat," Alves told Agence France-Presse.
He was speaking ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Manchester United today.
The mood is relaxed and confidence is high at the Parc des Princes as Thomas Tuchel's players seek to build on their 2-0 first-leg win last month, achieved without Neymar and Edinson Cavani.
While the former has been ruled out through injury and the latter might be fit to make only the bench, Alves believes PSG have proven they can cope with their absences.
"This is not a competition that depends on only one player having a spectacular day," he said.
"When you have experienced players, you don't tremble when it comes to playing in a hostile atmosphere, or under pressure."
In his debut campaign for the club last season, PSG were knocked out at this stage by Real Madrid, the first time Alves had not been involved in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in a decade.
It was a disappointment for the French champions and their Qatari owners, and talk had been rife over a divided dressing room, but Alves insisted there is an "incredible atmosphere" under Tuchel.
He said: "We are lucky this year to have a management team that is liked, respected by everyone. Everything has been put in place to make this a great year for us."
But, while PSG do not want to just get past United - they want to go beyond the last eight, something they have not managed since the Qatari takeover in 2011 - they are still haunted by the ghosts of their collapse at the Nou Camp two years ago despite winning the first leg 4-0.
Reflecting on that humiliation when they lost 6-1 to Barcelona in the second leg, Tuchel said: "It's not good to play with fear, but it's not good to play with too much confidence either.
"We have guys who played in Barcelona, who have that experience. We can't control the result, you never can in football, but we can control our performance."

Football: Spalletti leaves Inter Milan despite securing Champions League spot, Conte set to take over

MILAN (AFP) - Luciano Spalletti has left Inter Milan, the Serie A club announced on Thursday (May 30), with former Italy manager Antonio Conte set to be announced as the club's new coach.
"Luciano Spalletti is no longer head coach of the first team," Inter said in a statement. "The club wishes to thank Spalletti for his work and the results achieved together."
Spalletti's exit comes despite sealing Inter's Champions League berth for a second consecutive year on the final day of the Serie A season last Sunday.
But he paid with his job for failing to win any silverware during his two-year spell with the Chinese-owned club, as the 18-time Serie A champions search for a first trophy since the Coppa Italia in 2011.
Inter Milan chairman Steven Zhang paid tribute to the 60-year-old who returned the three-time European winners to the Champions League this season after a seven-year absence.
"A coach, a teacher, a friend," he wrote on Instagram with a photo of himself alongside Spalletti.
"You have always given your best, either rain or shine. This 2 years of adventure means so much for Inter and for me personally.

"We will never forget your dedication to this team, and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Once you are the coach of Inter, you would be always my coach. Grazie Mister Spalletti."
Former Italy and Chelsea coach Conte is reported to have already agreed a three-year deal reportedly worth €9 million (S$13.8 million) plus bonuses per season to replace Spalletti.
The 49-year-old Conte will be officially announced as the new coach on Friday, Gazzetta Dello Sport reported.
Conte won the first three of Juventus' eight straight Serie A titles and the English Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea.
Spalletti took over at Inter in mid-2017 having previously coached Zenit Saint Petersburg and Roma.
But it was a season of highs and lows with the club eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League in which they were drawn with Barcelona and Tottenham.
They fell in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Football: Messi claims record 5th Golden Shoe

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi collected a record fifth Golden Shoe award on Tuesday (Dec 18) for finishing last season as the top goalscorer in Europe.
The striker scored 34 goals in 68 games for Barcelona, putting him ahead of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Tottenham's Harry Kane.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award four times, hit 26 goals in 52 matches for Real Madrid.
After being prsented with his latest prize in Barcelona, Messi said: "The truth is I had no idea this would happen when I started. I dreamt of playing professional football and enjoying success, I love the game, but I never imagined I would have so much.
"I enjoy the work, the effort, I'm at the best team in the world and play with the best team-mates in the world, so everything is easier."
The ceremony was attended by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as fellow players like Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto.
Messi also discussed Monday's Champions League draw, which pitted Barca against Lyon in the round of 16.
"Lyon will be a complicated opponent," Messi said.
"Even if they are not known as one of the strongest teams, they are dangerous as they showed against Manchester City, one of the best teams in the world.
"It will be difficult to go through, but the opportunity is there for us. We have several Frenchmen in the team like Samuel Umtiti and Malcom, who played in France, so perhaps they can help as well."
