Football: Brighton edge into FA Cup quarter-finals

LONDON (AFP) - Brighton moved into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season as goals from Anthony Knockaert and Jurgen Locadia clinched a 2-1 win over Derby on Saturday (Feb 16).
Chris Hughton's side have been sucked into relegation danger in the Premier League after six games without a win.
But the Seagulls made the most of a welcome break from the grind of the relegation battle as they saw off Frank Lampard's Championship side at the Amex Stadium.
Derby had claimed the scalps of Manchester United and Southampton in domestic cup competitions this season.
But the fifth round tie was tipped in Brighton's favour by a dominant first-half display.
Brighton opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Knockaert bent his first-time shot into the bottom corner of Kelle Roos' net after connecting with Yves Bissouma's cross.
Hughton's team doubled their advantage when Locadia fired home from close range in first-half stoppage time after Bissouma's effort hit the post.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Ashley Cole set up a tense finish when the Derby defender headed in after 81 minutes.
It was the 38-year-old's first goal in England since 2012 and his first ever in the FA Cup and the landmark strike came in his second game since joining Derby until the end of the season following his release by LA Galaxy.
But, despite Derby's barrage of pressure, Cole's goal wasn't enough to spark a late escape for the Rams.
Championship strugglers Millwall are also through to the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.
AFC Wimbledon, currently bottom of League One, enjoyed a memorable win over West Ham in the fourth round.
But Neil Harris' side avoided becoming their latest upset victims as the Lions made it to the last eight for the second time in three years.
AFC Wimbledon's Joe Pigott hit the post from close range in the opening moments and Millwall made the most of that let-off to take the lead in the fifth minute.
Ryan Leonard made a barnstorming run down the right and whipped over a teasing cross that Scottish defender Murray Wallace converted with a powerful header at the far post.
Wallace also scored Millwall's last-gasp winner against Everton when the 2004 FA Cup finalists' came from behind for a shock fourth round victory.

PARIS (REUTERS) - A rampant France smashed South Korea out of sight on Friday (June 7) to open their women's soccer World Cup campaign in irrepressible style with a 4-0 victory that sent a warning to all other teams with a design on the trophy.
It was one-way traffic all night in a packed 45,000-seater Parc des Princes as the French launched wave after wave of attack at the hapless Koreans, running out easy winners to stamp their authority on Group A of the FIFA extravaganza.
France skipper Amandine Henry controlled the midfield with a firm grip and deft touch, while strikers Eugenie Le Sommer and Delphine Cascarino were constant threats.
From the very first minutes South Korea struggled to get out of their own half and Le Sommer set the tone after nine minutes when she slammed a shot past Korean keeper Kim Min-jung into the roof of the net to send the stadium into raptures.
France had all the play, and thought they had doubled their lead after 27 minutes when Griedge Mbock Bathy slammed a volley home, only for the video assistant referee to rule it out for offside two minutes later.
Wendie Renard made amends after 35 minutes, the powerful central defender thumping a header home for her 21st international goal. She added another headed goal to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime of what was rapidly becoming a non-contest.
The Koreans were being outclassed in every department, and trudged off at the break having barely ventured out of their own half.
Korea desperately scrambled to keep the French at bay - just - and with the result in no doubt French coach Corinne Diacre looked to preserve some of her star names for later action, taking Cascarino off in the 70th minute, replacing her with Valerie Gauvin; and replacing Amel Majri with fellow defender Eve Perisset four minutes later.
Just as the Koreans thought they had somehow kept the French at bay for the second period, Henry added to the tally, slamming a right foot shot curling into the Korean net from the edge of the area for 4-0 and a fitting finale.

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino admitted his Tottenham stars are suffering from fatigue after they lost for the first time at their new stadium as Michail Antonio fired West Ham to a surprise 1-0 victory on Saturday (April 27).
Pochettino's side had won all four matches at their new Â£1 billion (S$1.77 billion) Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
But Antonio's clinical second-half strike ended that run as the West Ham winger became the first visiting player to score in the plush arena.
Third-placed Tottenham's second defeat in their last three Premier League games put a dent in their bid to finish in the top four.
They hold a three-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea and are four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, with both teams in action on Sunday.
It was a frustrating warm-up for Tottenham's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax Amsterdam in north London on Tuesday.
Blaming Tottenham's hectic fixture list for their defeat, Pochettino said: "We cannot put away the circumstance. They arrived fresh and ready to compete, for us it is completely different.
"We were tired. We knew that it was going to be tough because it was a derby, but we have to move on.
"It was really tough today. We did not manage the ball properly. In the second half we conceded a lot of space for them to counter attack."
Conceding that Tottenham had hurt their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League, Pochettino added: "It is a fight, it is a race, with two games to play. We knew that before."
Pochettino had insisted Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 Uefa Cup was less significant than their top-four challenge.
But the Tottenham manager's team selection told a different story.
Defender Jan Vertonghen was absent with a reported injury as Pochettino made four changes, including resting Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente.

Pochettino revealed this week that injured striker Harry Kane hopes to be fit for the Champions League final if Tottenham make it and the England captain was watching from the stands as his club's unbeaten start in the new stadium came to an end.
With Son Heung-min suspended for the Ajax first leg, Pochettino had no reason to rest the South Korea forward against the Hammers and he was swiftly into the action as he raced away for a shot that cleared the bar.
Son should have done better on that occasion and he fluffed his lines again with a low shot that was too close to Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski after Dele Alli's pass gave him a clear sight of goal.
A flowing Tottenham move unlocked the West Ham defence and Son's blocked effort dropped perfectly for Christian Eriksen, but the Dane smashed his close-range shot straight at Fabianski.
Tottenham found it tougher to maintain any momentum in the second half, with Son's unsuccessful penalty appeal, after being bundled over by Arthur Masuaku, made more in hope than expectation.
Manuel Pellegrini's team were growing in confidence and they ended Tottenham's unblemished record in their new arena in the 67th minute.
Marko Arnautovic chipped a superb pass towards Antonio and the winger controlled on his chest in the six-yard box before blasting a powerful finish past Hugo Lloris.
Celebrating with a bizarre bouncing motion, Antonio staged a joyous jig in front of the West Ham fans.
"The celebration is from a guy called Dan Rue on Instagram who does these crazy dance moves. I have been busting it out in the clubs and I thought I have to bring it on the pitch. I love to bring out a bit of personality out there," Antonio said of his eye-catching dance.
Tottenham looked drained in the closing stages, but they could have denied West Ham their first away win of 2019 when Vincent Janssen's stoppage-time header was cleared off the line by Fabian Balbuena.

Bruised Blues a City concern

LONDON â€¢ Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is surprised by Chelsea's revolving-door policy with managers as he prepares for today's League Cup final, the match that could seal the fate of his counterpart Maurizio Sarri.
The Spaniard stated that he enjoyed City's backing in a way the Blues' former manager Antonio Conte never did, and suggested Sarri may encounter the same lack of support.
There has been mounting speculation over Sarri's future in recent weeks, after a mid-season slump best exemplified by the 6-0 humiliation in their league visit to City's Etihad Stadium earlier this month.
Guardiola believes Chelsea should adopt the same sort of long-term view City took when they employed him in 2016.
Comparisons have been drawn with his first season, when City struggled to adapt to his demanding style of play, although he was keen to dismiss the similarities.
"The situation is a little bit different. In my first year, never did the club doubt me. It was never in the media that I'd be sacked if they lose this game or the other game. It never happened," he said.
"I was surprised that when Conte won the title and they lost one or two games at the beginning of the following season, people started to say he was going to be sacked.
"I said: 'Wow, but two or three months ago they won the Premier League.' The situation is completely different."
Sarri is contesting his first final as a manager. City, however, remain favourites after overwhelming the Blues the last time out.
Guardiola, though, feels the 6-0 win counts for nothing as Chelsea will step up a gear in a Cup final.
He said: "I don't like to play a team again in a short period of time, when you've beaten them by so much. They are incredible professional players and they will put in extra (for the final)."
Sarri also cannot understand why his position is under threat.
The Guardian reported that the Blues are even considering hiring their former coach and current England assistant manager Steve Holland to help steady the ship on an interim basis.
Guardiola had a history of success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich and was given time and funds to overhaul City, but Sarri is unlikely to receive the same leeway.
The Italian also pointed to the praise given to Arsenal boss Unai Emery in the Spaniard's first season in the Premier League.
"We are in the first final of the season. We are one point from the top four, the same points as Arsenal, and (people say) Arsenal are doing well," Sarri said. "We are doing a little bit better because we are in a final, and yet our season is a disaster. I don't understand.
"Last season, this team gained 70 points, not 100. Then, in the summer, we changed everything. So there is another problem to solve."
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not renowned for his patience, and the two transfer-window bans imposed by Fifa on the Blues could not have come at a worse possible time for Sarri.
Even a win today may only delay the inevitable.

Speaking after Mohamed Salah's second-half penalty - his 17th goal of the season - gave Liverpool the three points, the Reds manager added: "We have to deliver results. You have to work hard if you want to be successful and we were ready for it.
"On the good days, everybody can win. On average days, not a lot of teams can win football games and, on a bad day, only a few can win. Today was not a bad day, but it was a difficult day because Brighton are doing really well."
Klopp also insisted the gap, which City can close to four points with victory over Wolves today, "meant nothing as tomorrow and Monday night could be different, and we can only concentrate on ourselves".
But he knows his watertight defence, which recorded their 13th clean sheet in 22 league games this season, provides the perfect base to build on. Only Chelsea (2004-05 season) have let in fewer goals after 22 matches in an English top-flight term.
The predatory instincts of Salah, who moved level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the league's top scorer on 14 goals, should also ensure they will be in the title mix come May.
Brighton's game plan of sitting deep meant the visitors dominated possession without any cutting edge before Pascal Gross hauled down Salah in the box and undid Chris Hughton's preparations.
The Seagulls boss, who had no complaints over the spot-kick award, lamented: "I feel for Pascal because Mo Salah is probably the most dangerous player once he gets in those positions one on one."

LONDON â€¢ Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes it is down to Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to be self-motivated and follow Paul Pogba's example by proving their worth again at the club - because this should be the "best time of their lives".
Chilean forward Sanchez has scored only one goal in the English Premier League this season with injuries and patchy form restricting him to five starts, while Belgian striker Lukaku has not fired on all cylinders with six goals in 16 appearances.
Ahead of today's home league game against Bournemouth, Solskjaer was asked if he could have an impact on his front men just like he has done with midfielder Paul Pogba, who scored twice and made two assists in the last two games under the Norwegian.
"I don't agree I've done that with Paul and I can do that with Romelu and Alexis. It's up to them when they get a chance," the 45-year-old said during his press conference on Friday.
"That's the name of the game when you're a footballer. You've got to do it yourself. Yes, you want help from your manager and your teammates.
"I gave some guidelines of course on expression, freedom of expression, but that's how I've always been as a manager. You can't tell the players what to do in this position. Just enjoy playing for this club - that's the best time of your life."
Pogba struggled to influence games under former boss Jose Mourinho this season amid a reported rift between the pair but the France World Cup winner has played with more freedom under Solskjaer, who has frequently backed his team to express themselves.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool opened up a seven-point gap at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (Jan 12), while Arsenal's poor away form continued with a 1-0 defeat at West Ham United.
With nearest challengers Manchester City not playing until Monday, Liverpool went into their clash at Brighton on the back of two successive defeats in all competitions and were made to work hard for the three points.
Neither side had a single shot on target in the first half, with the match settled by a Mohamed Salah penalty in the second half. Liverpool's 50th clean sheet under Juergen Klopp carried them home.
Fourth-placed Chelsea opened up a six-point gap over Arsenal in fifth with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the day's late fixture.
Arsenal's defeat means they have now won just one of their last seven matches on the road in the Premier League. If Manchester United beat third-placed Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday, they can draw level on 41 points with Arsenal.
There was no such slip-up from Liverpool, even if Brighton did not make it easy for the league leaders.
Roberto Firmino came close to giving his side the lead early in the first half but could not connect with Andrew Robertson's low cross.
For all their possession, though, they struggled to create any meaningful chances. Pascal Gross's clumsy challenge on Salah earned Liverpool the penalty which the Egyptian converted with aplomb.
Once again, Liverpool's defence stood firm as they saw out the win. Liverpool have conceded just 10 goals in their 22 league matches this season; only Chelsea in 2004-05 had conceded fewer after 22 matches in an English top-flight season.

"You have to work hard if you want to be successful and we were ready for it," manager Juergen Klopp said.
"Be ready for the defending, be ready for the counter-press and be ready to make solutions.
"I think it was the most mature performance we have made so far. We take all the points. That's the situation. It's cool but we know that the difference tomorrow and Monday night could be different. We can only concentrate on ourselves."

ARSENAL'S STRUGGLES CONTINUE

After their 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end at Southampton in mid-December, Arsenal have struggled to find their form, with their away performances of particular concern.
On Saturday, mustering just two shots on target against West Ham at the London Stadium, Arsenal's decline continued.
West Ham comfortably held on after Declan Rice got his first goal for the side - becoming the first teenager to score a Premier League goal for them in almost 10 years.
"It's a bad result for us," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said.
"It's concerning because we need to be competitive at home and away. At home we feel good but away we are not getting the results we want."
Pedro came in for Bayern Munich target Callum Hudson-Odoi for Chelsea against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, with the Spaniard opening the scoring in the ninth minute before Ciaran Clark levelled for Newcastle five minutes before halftime.
Willian was the match winner for Chelsea as he brilliantly curled the ball into the net to score his first league goal since the end of October to secure the points for Chelsea.
"I think it's always difficult in the Premier League," Willian said.
"We have to be more clinical.
"I think the character was good and the most important (thing) is to win the game. I scored a good goal. I found the space and put the ball exactly where I wanted."
At the bottom, Southampton continued their fine form away from home as they earned a hard-fought 2-1 win at Leicester City, despite having played half of the match with 10 men.
Burnley's fourth win in a row lifted them to 15th in the table after they came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Fulham, while bottom side Huddersfield Town were held to a 0-0 draw at Cardiff City.
