Football: Egypt to host 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

DAKAR (AFP) - Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between June 15 and July 13, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad announced in Dakar on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The CAF executive committee preferred Egypt to South Africa as replacements for original hosts Cameroon, who were dropped due to delays in preparations and concerns over security.
It will be the fifth time Egypt stage the biennial showpiece of African football after 1959 - when the country was called the United Arab Republic - 1974, 1986 and 2006.
Egypt only entered the running to host the Cup of Nations when fellow north African country Morocco announced they would not bid to do so.
Morocco were the hot media favourites to replace Cameroon as hosts and Egypt said they "did not want to compete against a fellow Arab nation".
Egypt boast many international-standard venues with the Cairo International Stadium (72,000) and Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria (87,000) boasting the largest capacities.
The choice of Egypt will immediately make them favourites to win a record-extending eighth Cup of Nations this year.

They won three of the four previous tournaments they hosted, failing only in 1974 when they were beaten by Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in the semi-finals.
The star of the current team, Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah, is favourite to retain the African Player of the Year award in Dakar later Tuesday.

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery has said Arsenal will be able to sign players only on loan this month.
The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.
"We cannot sign permanently," he said. "We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more."
Emery worked with Banega and Suarez at Sevilla and the latter is out of favour at the Nou Camp and would help to solve Arsenal's lack of attacking width.
However, it remains to be seen whether the club can secure a loan for the 25-year-old midfielder, with Barcelona asking for £10 million (S$17.2 million). Sevilla are likely to place an even heftier price on Banega, who has been a key figure for Emery in the past.
"I know this player and he's a very good player," the 47-year-old said.

MAKING ENDS MEET
We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is counting on youth to meet fixture demands.

The former Sevilla boss also insisted he was not unhappy with Arsenal's financial restrictions.
He added: "We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
"I am very happy. I know it is not easy for us now in this transfer market and, if we can find one player who can help us like we need, with the quality and a different player for getting in our squad, we are going to do it.
"But I am happy with every player today. It is really some injuries that didn't help us in the last matches because we struggled with different injuries with the players... if one or two players can come and help us, that is perfect."
The Gunners' defensive problems have eased for their visit to the London Stadium, with Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal all returning to full training earlier this week.
Midfielder Mesut Ozil could also play against Manuel Pellegrini's men, after shaking off the knee injury that has kept him out since Boxing Day.

New national coach by June, says FAS

New national coach by June, says FAS

The suspense over the identity of the new national football coach will linger for another three months, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said yesterday.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "We are at the tail end of the process. And we should be appointing one (national coach) before the next competition window (official Fifa match dates) in June."
The Lions have been without a coach since exiting the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup in the group stage last December. Then, FAS' head of youth Fandi Ahmad led the team for six months.
Tatsuma Yoshida, a 44-year-old Japanese and former S-League player with Jurong FC and an ex-coach of J-League club Kashiwa Reysol and Albirex Niigata, has been mentioned as a possible front runner for the hot seat.
Yesterday, it was announced that former national captain Nazri Nasir will lead the Lions at the AirMarine Cup held in Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium on March 20 and 23.
The other teams in the quadrangular are hosts Malaysia, Afghanistan and Oman.
The Lions will meet the Tigers of Malaysia in a Causeway battle on March 20 while Oman play Afghanistan on the same day. The winners will contest the final three days later while the losers will play in the third-place play-off.

FAS vice-president Teo Hock Seng, who will be the head of the delegation for the Cup, said: "This is a great opportunity for Singapore football. Malaysia did pretty well in the Suzuki Cup (they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Vietnam in the two-legged final), but I don't think we are too far away from them.
"I will be going up to ensure that we play to win."
Calling the appointment "a privilege and honour", Nazri, 48, said: "It will be do or die, there are no friendlies against Malaysia.
"I am looking at a very attacking team. We want players who have pace, aggression and are explosive. I want to see midfielders coming into the box, taking on players and shooting from outside the box.
"We are all ready to go."
Picking a squad of 22, Nazri has opted for a youthful line-up and decided not to call up 35-year-old veterans Shahril Ishak (138 caps) and Baihakki Khaizan (134).
Home United forward Adam Swandi, 23, the Singapore Premier League Young Player of the Year, was also omitted while goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, 34, is injured.
Said Nazri: "Bai and Shahril had done a lot for the country over the years. They had also done their part in the Suzuki Cup supporting and guiding the younger players. But now is the time to select more younger players."
Baihakki announced his retirement from international football on social media last night, thanking former national coaches Raddy Avramovic and Bernd Stange, FAS coaches and staff, his family and fans for guiding and supporting him since he made his Lions debut against Hong Kong on Aug 4, 2003.
"I hope I have given my best during the 12,240 minutes (of playing for the Lions). I apologise for all my wrongdoing on any occasion as I'm not the most perfect of humans. I'll be joining you soon in the stands, doing the Kallang Roar together as one Singapore," he wrote on Instagram.

LONDON • The path is now clear for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take up the full-time reins at Manchester United, after the caretaker manager yesterday made clear he was no longer contracted to Molde.
Senior club officials believe it is now a matter of when, not if, he is appointed on a permanent basis.
According to The Times of London, he is seen as the only candidate for the job after their progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in midweek.
And pressure on the club's hierarchy to ask him to stay on after his interim tenure expires in the summer ratcheted up several notches after Solskjaer confirmed at his pre-match press conference "that contract (with the Norwegian outfit until 2021) was terminated".
Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Premier League trip to Arsenal, he said: "I am contracted to United until the end of June. With the contract issue, you cannot have two contracts when you are a manager."
The Norwegian, who took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, also brushed off the clamour for him to put pen to paper after overseeing United's best away run with nine straight wins as "just the media".

HE WON'T BE DISTRACTED
With the contract issue, you cannot have two contracts when you are a manager...I'm just doing the best I can every single day. If and when a decision is to be made, then we will see.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United's interim manager, putting the ball in the court of the Old Trafford board.

The team are also unbeaten in the league under him, with 14 wins in 17 games in all competitions.
He added: "I am not here to get excited, I am here to do my job. I love managing these boys and I love working here.
"I'm just doing the best I can every single day. If and when a decision is to be made, then we will see.
"Absolutely everyone likes to get complimented and meet people that are happy. But (that) doesn't change my approach whatsoever.
"I'm good at focusing on what I shall be focusing on and that's not thinking about that part of it."
He also revealed that United's absentee list - they travelled to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday with 10 first-teamers either injured, ill or suspended - was easing up.
Midfielder Paul Pogba, who was banned for the second leg, is expected to return to his starting XI.
Solskjaer also had positive news over defender Eric Bailly and forward Anthony Martial, with the duo likely to be available for the clash at Emirates Stadium.
Expressing his hope that midfielders Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera would also recover in time, before challenging his side "to get ready again for a fantastic game with Arsenal", he told reporters: "They just need to have another couple of days of training, they've done well in their recovery work."
Solskjaer also tipped forward Marcus Rashford to kick on following the stoppage-time penalty that sealed the dramatic 3-1 victory in Paris, comparing the 21-year-old to the way Cristiano Ronaldo cut his teeth at Old Trafford before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.
"Rashy's goals sometimes are worldies and he does have a sensational strike of the ball," he said.
"But you see the change in Cristiano's goals from when he was young to now, he scores more from inside the box and that's what Rashy has to improve as well.
"There are legends we've had at this club who have stayed long and been one-club players, and we hope Rashy will be one of them."

Football: Nike 'very concerned' about rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Nike is "very concerned" about a rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar, the world's largest sportswear maker said on Thursday (June 6), raising questions about its sponsorship of one of the sport's most famous players.
Neymar denies the allegation of rape and has said the woman was trying to extort him. The woman appeared on Brazilian TV on Wednesday and said Neymar raped her in a Paris hotel.
Mastercard Inc also cancelled a planned ad campaign featuring the star of the Brazilian national team and French club Paris Saint-Germain, Brazilian media reported on Thursday.
Mastercard said in a statement it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up," according to reports in Brazil's three biggest newspapers.
The Nike statement said "we are very concerned" by the allegations "and will continue to closely monitor the situation."
A press representative for Mastercard in Brazil confirmed to Reuters the company had planned a campaign to coincide with this month's Copa America tournament, but she did not confirm a decision to suspend Neymar's role.
US press representatives for the company did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
A police report seen by Reuters showed that a woman had accused Neymar, 27, of raping her at a Paris hotel last month. Sao Paulo police are investigating the accusation.
Following media reports on the matter, Neymar posted a long video on Instagram, in which he denied the accusations, said he was a victim of extortion and shared messages he exchanged with the alleged victim, including racy photos he had received.
That led police in Rio de Janeiro to open an investigation into whether Neymar had committed a crime by posting those intimate pictures online.
A press representative for Neymar did not respond to requests for comment on the Mastercard sponsorship on a Wednesday night interview his accuser gave the SBT TV station.
"I was a victim of rape," she said in her first on-camera interview since her accusation became public.
She said that she and Neymar began exchanging private messages over social media, and that he paid for her flight to Paris and her hotel.
She said the relationship was consensual at first, but that Neymar quickly became aggressive, began to hit her and forced her to have sex with him without the use of a condom, despite her telling him repeatedly to stop.
Some of Neymar's teammates have come out in support of him, but national team coach Tite declined to pass judgment on the matter.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said on Thursday that Neymar would be dropped from the national team for the Copa America because of an ankle injury suffered in a friendly match against Qatar the night before.
